As the fight against the spread of Covid-19 intensifies in Kenya, 38 teachers in Lodwar, Turkana County, have surrendered to police after initially escaping arrest for flouting social distancing rules.

On Thursday, Turkana Central Sub-county Police Commander David Mburukua announced the arrest of 23 out of 61 teachers who were being trained on online teaching at Missions of Hope School in Napuu.

However, the remaining 38 teachers eventually surrendered to the authorities, bringing the total number of teachers under quarantine to 61.

According to Mr Mburukua, the teachers will undergo tests for the Covid-19 disease before they are released after the mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

"Through coordination with county health officials, we have now put them all under forced quarantine," Mr Mburukua said.

Mr Mburukua also warned residents against public gatherings and contravening government directives to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
