On May 8, 2020, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had a close call with death when a speeding lorry carrying sand lost control and hit his official vehicle in Machakos County.

The accident occurred as Sonko's convoy was exiting the Muua Hills Home, where he has been operating from since 2018, after he alleged that someone wanted him dead.

According to eyewitnesses, the lorry with registration number KBY 938L lost control and spilled sand all over the road, causing a scene that attracted hundreds of people.

However, Sonko escaped unhurt, and police have taken over investigations. The driver of the lorry, on the other hand, disappeared after the accident.

The incident comes at a time when Sonko is at loggerheads with the National Government over the management of Nairobi County, with the Interior Ministry recently withdrawing part of his security team.

As one Twitter user @czar_toreto put it, 'Why always Governor Sonko? He escapes death after a speeding lorry full of sand loses control outside his farm house gate. This was a planned accident by Cartels?'
