On May 8, 2020, the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) took swift action to protect Nairobi's waterways by shutting down operations at the Boulevard hotel in Nairobi. The hotel was found to be discharging untreated effluent into the Nairobi River, posing a significant threat to the environment.

Nema launched a crackdown on institutions that have connected pipes draining untreated effluent into the Nairobi river, as part of an initiative to clean up the heavily polluted river. The authority warned that those found violating the relevant regulations will be shut down.

According to Nema, the Boulevard hotel has also been ordered to remove pipes discharging raw sewage into the river. This move is part of the authority's efforts to ensure that all institutions in Nairobi adhere to environmental regulations and protect the city's waterways.

Nema's crackdown on pollution in the Nairobi river is a welcome step towards protecting the environment and public health. The authority's efforts will go a long way in ensuring that the city's waterways are clean and safe for all.
