On May 8, 2020, a special flight from Mumbai landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, bringing back 232 Kenyans who had been stranded in India for months.

Foreign Affairs CAS Ababu Namwamba welcomed the passengers, praising the partnership between the government and Kenya Airways for providing flights to bring back stranded Kenyans.

‘The partnership will avert the agony of many Kenyans stranded abroad,’ Namwamba said.

The passengers, who were drawn from six cities in India, had to undergo COVID-19 screening before boarding the flight and upon arrival at the airport.

They will now self-quarantine in their homes under the supervision of their doctors.

Kenya Airways has evacuated Kenyans from London, Mumbai, and Guangzhou, with the National Carrier putting up measures to ensure the safety of all passengers on board.

‘We are aware that many Kenyans had travelled to India for medical reasons and were stranded due to the restrictions on travel that were imposed by the different Governments. We are making these flights for them to reunite them with their loved ones and bring them home safe,’ said Kenya Airways Group Managing Director & CEO, Allan Kilavuka.
