Published on May 8, 2020, a report by the Business Daily highlighted a surge in luxury car sales in Kenya, with brand new Ranger Rovers, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz being the top choices among the country's wealthy individuals.
According to data from the Kenya Motor Industry Association (KMI), dealers sold a total of 45 units of high-end cars in the first quarter of the year, a 73% increase from the 26 units sold in the same period last year.
Mercedes-Benz emerged as the top-selling luxury brand, with 17 units sold in the first quarter, up from 13 units in the same period the previous year. Land Rover followed closely, with 12 units sold, while BMW sold eight units, and Porsche sold seven units.
The high demand for luxury cars in Kenya is attributed to their status symbol, with prices ranging from Sh. 30 million and above. The market for luxury cars in Kenya remains to be seen how it will perform in the second quarter of the year, given the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the local economy.
