On Friday morning, a demonstration by irate residents and traders brought traffic to a standstill along the busy Outering Road in Eastlands area.
The protests, centered at the Kariobangi – Korogocho bridge – Komarock road junction, were sparked by the government's decision to demolish houses in Kariobangi North, leaving over 7,000 families homeless.
According to activist David Wanyoike, the protestors were enraged after the government dug trenches disrupting good supply to the market.
"They are protesting because the government on Monday dug big trenches that connects the market, at the moment they cannot deliver or receive their goods that they sell at the market," he told Nairobi News on May 8, 2020.
Traders at the Korogocho market in Kariobangi area had been given three days to vacate the area, but a high court order on Monday stopped the demolition pending a case filed by the Kariobangi Sewerage Self Help Group.
The group, representing hundreds of residents, claimed that City Hall had allocated them the parcel of land, and listed Lands CS Farida Karoney, Kasarani deputy commissioner, registrar of titles, chief land registrar, and the attorney-general as respondents in the case.
