Italy's top football clubs are facing a coronavirus outbreak, with four Sampdoria players and three from Fiorentina testing positive for the virus.

According to Sampdoria, three new cases of Covid-19 emerged during recent tests, with one player testing positive again.

Earlier this week, Fiorentina revealed that three players and three staff members had tested positive for the virus, bringing the total number of cases among Italy's top flight clubs to eight.

Some of the affected players had previously recovered from the virus, including five Sampdoria players who had suffered from Covid-19 in March.

Italian Football Federation (FIGC) officials met with the government's technical scientific committee on Thursday to discuss the medical protocol for a potential return to group training.

Italian Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora expressed hope that team training could resume on May 18, following the meeting.
