Adapting to the New Normal

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect the world, many young professionals are facing unprecedented challenges in their careers and personal lives. In this article, we speak to five individuals who share their stories of adapting to the new normal.

From teachers to artists, these young professionals have had to find creative ways to cope with the loss of income and the physical separation from their clients and colleagues.

One of those individuals is Duncan Mwema, a 27-year-old teacher who has had to adjust to teaching online. 'I was lucky to have a supportive employer who took me through rigorous training on online education,' he says. 'But online interactions with students are not as lively as face-to-face exchanges.'

Jimmy Kitheka, a 27-year-old impression artist, has also had to adapt to the new reality. 'Business has been very slow,' he says. 'I am currently surviving on commissions, but I haven’t lost motivation.'

Boera Bisieri, a 27-year-old digital marketing executive and actress, has had to find new ways to earn a living. 'I created a virtual boutique on Instagram called Silk and Lace, where I sell lingerie and pyjamas,' she says. 'I also started making interior decor products using empty wine bottles and yarn.'

Martha Shavuya, a 24-year-old visual and digital artist, and Jeff Muchina, a 27-year-old director of Shujaa Stories, also share their stories of adapting to the new normal.

As the pandemic continues to affect the world, it is clear that young professionals are finding creative ways to cope with the challenges they are facing. From teaching online to creating new businesses, these individuals are showing resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
