May 7, 2020, marked a significant moment in the life of Peter Tabichi, a maths and physics teacher from Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani village, Rift Valley. He had just won the $1 million Global Teacher's Prize, beating 10,000 nominees in the process.
Tabichi, a Franciscan friar, has been teaching in Pwani village for years, dedicating himself to his students and the community. He has been giving 80 percent of his salary to the impoverished people of Pwani Village, and has also started peace clubs to foster peace in the community.
When asked about his life after the award, Tabichi humbly attributed the win to his students and teachers he has worked with. He expressed gratitude to God, saying it's been a privilege to serve others.
Despite the attention and limelight that came with the award, Tabichi has remained grounded. He still walks the streets, does the things he loves, and maintains the same circle of friends and family. He credits his faith and prayer for helping him stay focused and humble.
Tabichi's journey has not been without its challenges. He has found it difficult to cope with the attention and media scrutiny, preferring to do more and talk less. However, he has learned to lean on his faith and prayer during these times.
When asked about his decision not to have children, Tabichi expressed peace with his choice, saying it's okay for him. He believes that everyone serves God in different capacities, and that he is serving God through his work as a teacher.
