As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha is considering reopening schools for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates to prepare for examinations.
On May 7, 2020, Magoha and Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang appeared before the National Assembly Education committee to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the education sector.
According to Magoha, the government is exploring various scenarios, including postponing national exams if the number of COVID-19 cases continues to surge, making schools unsafe for learners.
Another proposal is to conduct learning in sessions, with one group of learners taught in the morning and another in the afternoon, in line with the Health ministry's guidelines on social distancing.
Magoha stated that a decision will be made within the next two weeks, based on consultations with stakeholders.
“Some of those scenarios may well see the exams going to next year,” Magoha said, referring to the possibility of postponing the exams.
