May 7, 2020 - The rivalry between Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga has spilled over into the Senate, with ODM de-whipping Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina from two committees.
The move is seen as a result of Mr Kina's decision to allow committee members affiliated to DP Ruto to propose his name and vote for him against Prof Sam Ongeri, ODM's candidate, in the election for the chairmanship of the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee (CPAIC).
Mr Kina won the election by five votes against 4, with nominated Senator Millicent Omanga (Jubilee) proposing his name and voting for him.
Ms Omanga, a member of the Delegated Legislation Committee, has been a thorn in the flesh of ODM, having previously proposed Nyamira Senator Okong'o Omogeni against West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio (KANU).
Mr Orengo, the Senate minority leader, gave a notice on May 7, indicating the party's wish to dewhip Mr Kina from the CPAIC and the Senate Business Committee (SBC).
“I hereby give a notice of the discharge and removal of Senator Ledama Ole Kina from the CPAIC and SBC,” Mr Orengo said in the notice to Speaker Kenneth Lusaka.
