On May 7, 2020, the Kenyan Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage flagged off an initiative to support needy athletes affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, the ministry has identified over 1000 athletes who will receive food packages and cash stipends.
‘Eliud Kipchoge has helped us identify the needy athletes who really deserve to get these food packages as an initial relief,’ Mohamed said.
The athletes, who were meant to participate in the World Youth Championship in July and other local races, will receive food packages containing maize and wheat flour, rice, cooking oil, pasta, and other essential items.
Additionally, the ministry plans to provide a cash stipend of Sh 10,000 to each athlete, although the details of the stipend distribution are still being finalized.
CS Mohamed called on corporate entities to partner with the ministry to support this initiative, emphasizing that the Sports Fund alone cannot reach all the needy and deserving athletes.
