As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect Kenya, concerns have been raised over the transparency and accountability of the funds allocated to combat the crisis.

According to a recent briefing by the Ministry of Health to the National Assembly, Kenyans are seeking detailed information on the expenditure of Kshs.1.3 billion under the Transforming Health Systems for Universal Care Project and funds from the government of Kenya.

Specifically, citizens are demanding clarification on the amount of funds raised and managed under the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund Board, as well as the funds allocated and disbursed to counties to aid in dealing with the crisis.

Transparency International Kenya is urging Parliament to demand detailed information on the expenditure presented to the National Assembly by the Ministry of Health and to implement measures to enhance transparency and accountability.

These measures include the mandatory provision of transparency and accountability measures, the adoption of open information systems, and the subjecting of all expenditure incurred in COVID-19 response efforts to internal audits.

Additionally, the organization is calling for the selection and appointment of an Auditor General, which is long overdue, and for the meaningful participation of critical stakeholders in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.

Transparency International Kenya will continue to support processes to improve accountability in the use of resources intended to tackle the crisis.
