On May 7, 2020, hundreds of Eastleigh residents in Nairobi, Kenya, took to the streets to protest a government directive imposing a 15-day partial lockdown in the area to curb the rapid spread of coronavirus.
The lockdown, which was imposed to address the high number of Covid-19 infections in Eastleigh, has been met with resistance from residents who claim it is unfair and will hurt the local economy.
According to Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan, the lockdown is a necessary measure to protect the residents from the deadly disease. However, some residents have disputed this claim, saying that the high number of infections in Eastleigh and Mombasa Old Town is due to targeted testing.
Eastleigh and Mombasa Old Town have been marked as hotspots for Covid-19 infections, with the government imposing a lockdown on the areas to prevent the further spread of the disease.
On Wednesday, Kenya recorded the highest number of positive cases in 24 hours, with 47 new cases reported, of which 32 were from Mombasa and 11 from Nairobi.
