On May 7, 2020, Amnesty International Kenya urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to take immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Nairobi's Kariobangi area.
The organization's Director, Irungu Houghton, expressed deep concern over the recent evictions, which left over 5,000 people without a home, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and heavy rains.
"It is inhumane and unfair for the government to render people homeless at a time the country is dealing with a global pandemic and floods," Houghton said.
Amnesty International Kenya is calling for an Executive Order to stop all evictions aimed at reclaiming public land until the country contains the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sam Olando from Pamoja Trust urged the president to direct the Ministries involved in the eviction to institute corrective measures on how the displaced people will be resettled.
"The government must take full responsibility for the injustices that these families have suffered and make reparatory measures to ensure that they are compensated and protected from recurrent breach of their rights," Olando said.
