On May 7, 2020, the government implemented a lockdown in Eastleigh, sparking widespread criticism from residents.

David Odhiambo, chairman of the Eastleigh Residents Association, argued that the containment measure was ill-advised, given the economic impact on those living from hand to mouth.

‘‘We don’t support this lockdown because the same government can not feed us, we have so many hustlers who carry loads in Eastleigh so that they can earn a living … tunaonewa sana na serikali,’’ he said.

Residents from various areas, including Bahati, Majengo, Pangani, and Ziwani, have also raised concerns about the lockdown's implementation.

One resident lamented, ‘‘We managed to move out today, my job place is at Pangani but the problem is how i shall go back home, my families are there and for now everywhere is closed.. the government should come clear and state boundaries.’’
