On May 7, 2020, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa declared Gor Mahia champions of the Kenyan Premier League, sparking controversy in the football community.
AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda has spoken out against the decision, stating that the club will not contest it at the Sports Disputes Tribunal.
Shikanda had initially threatened to take the matter to the tribunal, but has now changed his stance, citing a lack of proper guidelines and laws to govern the game in Kenya.
"History will judge Gor Mahia harshly just like the debate on who won the league in 1971 has followed AFC Leopards to date. I will not be heading to the tribunal but let it be known that existing procedures in law were not used in declaring this season's champions," said Shikanda.
Shikanda also expressed disappointment that FKF used the situation for populist politics, saying it was sad that Gor Mahia had a 99% chance of winning the trophy on the pitch but allowed FKF to declare them champions.
Kenyan Premier League (KPL) CEO Jack Oguda acknowledged receiving the letter declaring Gor as KPL champions from FKF and said the league would issue its position on the issue on the same day.
