On Wednesday, Deputy Head of Public Service Wanyama Musiambo and other senior government officials officiated a tree-planting exercise in Kajiado County, as part of efforts to increase Kenya's forest cover.
Kenya Forest Service hosted the officials, including Principal Secretaries Joseph Njoroge and Saitoti Torome, for a tree-planting activity at Ngong Hills Forest, where 3,000 indigenous trees were planted.
The officials emphasized the importance of forests in mitigating climate-related adversities such as floods and landslides, and urged the public to plant more trees during the long rains to boost the forest cover to 10 percent by 2022.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Wanyama Musiambo noted that forests are crucial for human livelihood and called for more joint collaboration between government and non-state actors to conserve and protect the resource.
Meanwhile, Kenya Forest Service Board Vice Chairman Peter Wandera led a separate tree-planting exercise at Mumbaka, Port Victoria Forest Station in Busia County, where a total of 6,015 tree seedlings were planted.
Mr. Wandera assured of continuous tree-planting activities in the region during the long rains season and urged adjacent communities to support the efforts in raising the country's tree cover to 10 percent by 2022.
