Facebook Names Maina Kiai in Panel for Content Decisions

On May 6, 2020, Facebook announced the members of its Oversight Board, a panel of experts tasked with deciding on content to allow or remove from the world's largest social media platform.

Among the 20 members is Maina Kiai, a human rights advocate from Kenya who has served as a director of Human Rights Watch's Global Alliances and Partnerships Programme and as a former United Nations special rapporteur.

The Oversight Board members have lived in more than 27 countries and speak at least 29 languages among them.

Other notable members of the board include Catalina Botero-Marino, a former special rapporteur for freedom of expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States; Jamal Greene, a Columbia University law professor specializing in constitutional rights adjudication; and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a former prime minister of Denmark who later served as CEO of Save the Children.
