On May 6, 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed plans to hold its next session remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originally scheduled for Tokyo before the opening of the 2020 Games, the session will now take place via video link on July 17, 2020, from 12 to 4 p.m. CEST, and will be live streamed.

The decision comes after the Tokyo Games were postponed on March 24, 2020, for one year due to the virus, which has claimed over 250,000 lives worldwide.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had previously stated that it would be 'difficult' to hold the postponed Olympics if the coronavirus pandemic was not contained.
