On May 6, 2020, Nairobi's Eastleigh estate became the first in the city to face specific restrictions as the government attempted to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The exponential rise in new infections in the busy hub prompted the government to impose a partial lockdown, restricting movement and gatherings in the area.

According to the government, the measures were necessary to contain the spread of the virus and protect the community.
