On May 6, 2020, the Kenyan government announced a new measure to combat the spread of COVID-19: mandatory testing for truck drivers.

According to the announcement, truck drivers will be required to take COVID-19 tests 48 hours before entering or exiting border points.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe attributed the increased cases to ongoing mass testing across the country, stating that the situation in areas such as Eastleigh in Nairobi and Old Town in Mombasa has become a 'serious concern.'

As of May 6, Kenya had reported 582 cases of COVID-19, with 47 new infections in the past day. The country has also seen a rise in recoveries, with eight new recoveries bringing the total to 190.

Two people in Mombasa succumbed to the virus at their homes, bringing the fatality figures to 26.
