As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the economy, the Kenyan government has launched a programme to provide relief to jobless youths in informal settlements in Nairobi.
The programme, dubbed Kazi Mtaani, aims to provide daily income to over 10,000 youths living in Mathare, Kibera, Mukuru, and Korogocho slums.
Under the programme, the youths will earn Sh616 per day for a month, undertaking duties such as sanitation and environment preservation in their respective settlements.
State Department of Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary, Charles Hinga, explained that the payment structure is designed to provide a daily income, with workers being paid at least twice a week through mobile money transfers.
"The programme provides opportunities for citizens above the age of 18 of all genders provided they reside in the target informal settlements," said Mr Hinga.
The Kazi Mtaani National Hygiene Programme (NHP) initiative is an extended public works project aimed at providing employment and daily wages for low-income workers living in informal settlements while improving urban infrastructure and service delivery.
