As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in Kenya, a glimmer of hope has emerged with more people returning to work in the past week, according to a new report.
Released on Monday, Google's latest weekly Covid-19 Community Mobility Report shows a 16% increase in people accessing their places of work in the last seven days.
Although the rate of people going to work is still below the normal baseline, the report indicates that from April 26, the rate has been slowly increasing towards the baseline, meaning more people are leaving their homes for their workstations.
According to the report, the current rate is at 19% below the normal baseline, significantly higher than the rate one month ago, which stood at 50% below the baseline.
"This has seen reduced movement in residential areas to 20% from 25%," Google Kenya stated.
However, the report also reveals that people are avoiding crowded places such as restaurants and markets, with recreational areas like shopping centres and movie theatres recording a five percent reduction in movement.
"Recreational areas such as restaurants, shopping centres and movie theatres have recorded a five per cent reduction in movement," the statement said.
One contributing factor to the increased movement could be the April 27 government directive allowing restaurants to operate between 5am and 4pm.
