Heavy rains have caused devastating floods in Kenya, claiming the lives of 194 people since last month.

As of Tuesday, 30 people had been washed away by floods in various parts of the country, with the death toll rising to 194, according to Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.

The most affected areas are around River Nyando, River Nzoia, River Tana, and parts of Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot.

Residents in these areas have been advised to move out, with thousands of families already displaced and many more set to be uprooted from their homes.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi said security forces have started moving people in flood-prone areas to safer grounds, with some residents being relocated by force.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter warned that dams across the country are at unprecedented levels, with the Masinga reservoir reaching a historical high of 1057.86 meters above sea level.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning that heavy rains are expected to continue until the end of May, with parts of Western, Mt Kenya, North Eastern, and Rift Valley at risk.
