On May 6, 2020, a middle-aged man, later identified as Sammy from Likoni, was found dead at the entrance of Coast General Hospital (CGH) in Mombasa. The cause of his death remains unknown, and it is unclear if he was sick or what he was ailing from.
According to eyewitnesses, Sammy had been using crutches and had been camping outside the hospital's gate since Friday, seeking to enter the facility. A businessman who operates a shop adjacent to the hospital gate claimed that Sammy had been denied entry by the security guards due to his shabby and dirty appearance.
However, County Health Executive Hazel Koitaba denied the allegations, stating that the body of the deceased had been dumped at the gate. Koitaba said that the hospital had reported the incident to the police and that the body had been taken for a post-mortem to establish the cause of death.
Urban Sub County Police boss Eliud Monari confirmed the incident, stating that the man was a street beggar and that police were investigating the allegations that he was denied entry into the hospital.
