On April 6, 2020, Russia surpassed Germany to become the country with the sixth-highest number of confirmed coronavirus infections, with over 10,000 new cases reported for the fourth day in a row.
According to health officials, Russia has emerged as a new hotspot for the virus, with the highest number of new infections in Europe in recent days.
As of April 6, 2020, Russia had reported a total of 165,929 cases and 1,537 deaths, with the number of infections rising by more than 10,000 a day since Sunday.
Despite the sharp rise in cases, Russia's official fatality rate has remained low in comparison to countries including Italy, Spain, and the United States.
President Vladimir Putin was set to chair a government meeting to discuss a gradual withdrawal from virus lockdown later on April 6, 2020.
