On May 6, 2020, Kenya received a significant boost in its fight against COVID-19 as the United Arab Emirates sent an aid plane containing medical supplies to the country.
The aid, which is part of the UAE's efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19 across Africa, is intended to support thousands of medical professionals working tirelessly to combat the virus.
UAE Ambassador to Kenya Khalid Khalifa AlMualla emphasized the UAE's commitment to supporting Kenya and its neighbors in their fight against COVID-19, stating, 'The UAE is actively engaged in strengthening the fight against COVID-19 throughout Africa.' He added, 'The UAE leadership affirms that no country is left behind as the world comes together to defeat COVID-19.'
Notably, this is not the first time Kenya has received aid from the UAE. To date, the UAE has provided more than 433 metric tons of aid to over 37 countries, supporting nearly 433,000 medical professionals in the process.
Kenya has also received support from other partners, including a $50 million grant from the World Bank Group to support the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Locally, the government has received over Sh1 billion in the national emergency COVID-19 kitty.
