On May 5, 2020, Professor Neil Ferguson, a leading epidemiologist, stepped down from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies following reports that he had allowed a woman to visit him at home during the UK's coronavirus lockdown.

Ferguson, who had advised British leaders on lockdown measures, admitted to making an error of judgment and taking the wrong course of action.

"I accept I made an error of judgement and took the wrong course of action," he said.

"I deeply regret any undermining of the clear messages around the continued need for social distancing to control this devastating epidemic," he added.

The UK government had imposed strict stay-at-home orders in late March, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordering a three-week lockdown on March 23.

Under the measures, non-essential shops and services were shut, and residents were told not to go out except for exercise and to buy essential items.
