On April 27, 2020, Tecra Muigai, the daughter of Keroche Breweries directors Tabitha and Joseph Karanja, suffered a cerebral edema after falling from a staircase at a house she shared with her 54-year-old boyfriend, Omar Lali, in Lamu. She was airlifted to Nairobi and admitted to a high-end hospital, where she slipped into a coma and passed away on May 2, 2020.
According to reports, Tecra and Omar had been in a relationship since mid-2019 and had been spending time together at various hotels. In early April 2020, Tecra visited Omar in Lamu, where they rented a room at the Manda Diamond Hotel in Shella for a week before moving to a private cottage.
Photos of the couple during their happy times have surfaced online, showcasing their love for each other. The couple's relationship has sparked a mix of reactions from Kenyans, with some expressing their condolences and others questioning the age gap between Tecra and Omar.
On May 4, 2020, Omar Lali appeared before Lamu principal magistrate Allan Temba, who ordered him to be detained for 21 more days as requested by police as they continued to investigate Tecra's death. The case will be mentioned on May 26, 2020.
