On May 4, 2020, Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina launched Covid Organics, a herbal mixture, claiming it could prevent and cure patients suffering from the novel coronavirus.

The African Union has since entered discussions with Madagascar via its embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to obtain technical data on the safety and efficiency of the herbal remedy.

Once gathered, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) will review the scientific data on the safety and efficacy of Covid Organics, adhering to global technical and ethical norms.

”This review will be based on global technical and ethical norms to garner the necessary scientific evidence regarding the performance of the tonic,” the African Union stated.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has cautioned against any self-medication, emphasizing that it has not recommended any medicine as a cure for COVID-19.

Despite this, the WHO expressed support for scientifically-proven traditional medicine, stating, “WHO welcomes every opportunity to collaborate with countries and researchers to develop new therapies and encourages such collaboration for the development of effective and safe therapies for Africa and the world.”
