On May 6, 2020, Kenya's COVID-19 cases continued to rise, with 535 infections reported, including 45 cases announced on a single day.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe expressed concern over the laxity of Kenyans in adhering to public health regulations, stating that the situation was 'worrying.'
He cited the example of people mingling in hotels and other public places without wearing masks, and warned that the trend would not be reversed if Kenyans continued to disobey regulations.
As a result, the government announced plans to enforce the law more strictly, with security forces set to crack down on violators.
Hotel and restaurant operators were also warned that their licenses would be revoked permanently if they continued to violate the law.
Kagwe urged politicians to tone down their rhetoric and focus on educating Kenyans on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
