Published on May 6, 2020, a devastating flood has struck the Bunyala Irrigation Scheme in Budalang'i constituency, leaving over 600 farmers with huge losses.

According to Edwin Manyonge, the scheme's manager, at least 1,300 acres of rice belonging to local farmers are currently under water. The affected rice was due for harvesting before the calamity struck.

Cornel Magero, a farmer from Busagwa village, is one of the many affected by the floods. He had invested Sh100,000 in his two-acre rice plantation, which was at the flowering stage. 'I invested the money I had in the farm expecting to reap big once I harvest my rice, but it has all gone down the drain,' Mr Magero said.

The flooding was caused by water from River Nzoia and Lake Victoria back flow.

Most residents in Budalang'i rely on rice farming as a source of livelihood, making the loss even more devastating.
