On May 6, 2020, a 60-year-old man was arrested in Homa Bay County for allegedly defiling and infecting a 16-year-old girl with HIV.
The suspect, a neighbour of the girl's parents in the village, is reported to have defiled the minor on three different occasions, with the last incident occurring on April 22.
According to Ndhiwa Sub-county Police Commander Robert Aboche, the girl fell ill and was taken to Ndhiwa Sub-county hospital by her parents, where she was diagnosed with HIV.
Police were called, and the minor recorded a statement. The suspect is currently under police custody and will undergo a HIV test at the sub-county hospital to determine if he is also positive.
Commander Aboche warned perpetrators that they will face the full force of the law, stating, "It is unfortunate that most of the men who defile girls in this area are married. I am hereby warning them that if they don’t stop violating children’s rights they will face jail term."
