On May 6, 2020, a tragic incident occurred in Mogoiywa village, Aldai sub-County, Nandi County, where a 78-year-old man, Kibii Chumo, was found dead in his compound.
Chumo had recently received Sh50,000 in coffee farming proceeds and government stipends for the elderly, which is believed to have motivated a criminal gang to attack him at his home.
A passerby discovered the man's body in the compound after noticing some blood drops, and raised an alarm.
Area assistant chief Timothy Maiyo confirmed that the old man had been living alone and that the body was found lying in a pool of blood a few metres from his house.
Aldai OCPD David Nyaputo said Chumo succumbed to stab injuries from a sharp object on his head, legs, and hands, and that the motive of the killing was yet to be established.
"Three days ago, the deceased had gone to Kapsabet town to collect money the government has just paid senior citizens. Coincidentally, he had also earned coffee bonus amounting to over Sh50,000," said Mr Maiyo.
"The body was found lying in a pool of blood a few metres from his house. The position of the body indicated that the deceased struggled with the killers before he died," Mr Nyaputo said.
