As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe, Poonam Sharma Mathis, a 37-week pregnant woman, found herself in the midst of a unique and challenging birth experience. On a day that would become one of the most intense surgeries she could have, Poonam gave birth to her daughter Asha in a New York hospital.
With the hospital overwhelmed and staff struggling to keep up with the demands of the pandemic, Poonam's experience was far from typical. She was separated from her husband Kris immediately after the birth, with Poonam wearing a mask and Kris in a hazmat suit.
Despite the challenges, Poonam was grateful to have been able to meet her daughter and hold her briefly before being separated. She was also relieved to have tested negative for COVID-19, allowing her to kiss her daughter's head.
However, Poonam's experience was not without its difficulties. She described the pain of the C-section as 'traumatic' and the feeling of being alone and unable to advocate for herself as 'overwhelming'. She also expressed her frustration with the hospital's response to her needs, including waiting for medication and experiencing delays in care.
Despite the challenges, Poonam was grateful to have a healthy baby and to have been able to bring her home. She was also grateful for the support of her husband and son, who were able to care for her and the baby during her recovery.
