Members of Parliament have questioned the use of funds allocated to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, with Health Permanent Secretary Susan Mochache at the center of the controversy.
Published on May 5, 2020, the scrutiny comes as the government faces public outcry over the expenditure of Ksh1 billion allocated to the health ministry.
According to Mochache, the funds were used to support various initiatives, including the allocation of Ksh 42 million for ambulances, Ksh 4 million for tea and snacks, and Ksh 75 million to the ministry of defence.
Additionally, Ksh 10 million was given to the National Youth Service for security at isolation centers, and Ksh 150 million was allocated to Kenyatta National Hospital to equip and provide additional beds to Mbagathi hospital.
The recruitment of 568 human resource health staff at Kenyatta University Referral Centre was also allocated Ksh 245 million, while 288 staff members at Mbagathi will be employed for a one year term at Ksh 125 million, and 1059 counties staff at a cost of Ksh 498 million.
Mochache further stated that a request has been made to the treasury to provide Ksh 300 million for masks to address the issues of shortage.
On alleged exorbitant quarantine fees, Mochache noted that the government is working on modalities to settle all quarantine fees so as not to prohibit Kenyans from undergoing testing.
