On May 5, 2020, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe cautioned Kenyans against ignoring government measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, warning that things were not getting any better.
Mr. Kagwe noted that people leading others astray had become a common phenomenon in society, and that those who ignored correction would lead others astray.
He quoted a verse from the Bible, Proverbs 10:17, to emphasize the consequences of non-adherence: 'Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.'
Mr. Kagwe explained that the current figures demonstrated that things were not getting better, and that people who claimed otherwise were lying to others.
He also cautioned against stigmatizing recovered patients, emphasizing that no one was immune to the disease and that everyone needed to show understanding and empathy.
Mr. Kagwe shared a personal anecdote about a lady who was stigmatized by her church choir after recovering from the disease, and urged Kenyans to treat recovered patients with kindness and compassion.
