As of May 5, 2020, the construction timeline of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (Lapsset) remains on course, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project, valued at 2.5 trillion shillings, includes a 32-berth port, transportation hubs, an oil pipeline, an oil refinery, and three resort cities in Lamu, Isiolo, and Turkana.

According to Meng Guosi, project manager of Berth 3, all workers were required to move into the camp after the first COVID-19 case was confirmed on March 13, 2020, to prevent any possible infection that could have hampered the project's implementation.

Each worker is required to wear personal protective gear and undergo regular temperature checkups to reduce the risk of infection.

Construction of the first three berths is nearing completion, with the concrete placement of the last section of the vertical and horizontal beams in the third berth already completed.

China Communications Construction Company, the contractor, has directed all workers to move into the camp to reduce the risk of infection.
