On May 5, 2020, a major milestone was achieved in the search for the missing officers who drowned in River Kagir in Baringo County. The seventh body of the missing officer was retrieved, bringing the total number of dead officers to seven.
The officer was the driver of the vehicle the officers from the Anti Stock Theft Unit were using the night they were swept away by flash floods at the seasonal river Kagir. The vehicle was ferrying 12 officers, and three of them managed to swim across, while two others were rescued and treated at Marigat Sub-County hospital and discharged.
Baringo County Commander Wafula said the death of the officers was a big loss, as they were maintaining security at the volatile Yatya area in Baringo North. He added that some of the firearms had been retrieved, and the search for the others was ongoing.
Wafula said, "On Monday evening, we retrieved another body of the missing officer after a four-day search. This adds the numbers of officers who died to seven." The operation, he added, had come to a close following the retrieval of the bodies in a rescue operation that kicked off on Friday last week.
