Published on May 5, 2020, a programme aimed at providing daily income to jobless youths in Nairobi's informal settlements has been rolled out.
The State Department of Housing's Kazi Mtaani initiative targets over 26,000 youths across 23 informal settlements countrywide, with the first phase focusing on 10,600 youths in Mathare, Kibera, Mukuru, and Korogocho slums.
According to Charles Hinga, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, the youths will earn a daily wage while undertaking duties such as sanitation and environment preservation in their respective settlements.
"The payment structure is aimed at providing a daily income, and workers will be paid at least twice a week through mobile money transfers," said Mr Hinga.
The programme has been conceptualized to provide social relief by providing jobs and facilitating hygiene interventions to help contain the Covid-19 pandemic in informal urban settlements.
