On May 5, 2020, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) made a contentious decision to end the 2019-20 Kenyan Premier League season prematurely and declare Gor Mahia the champions.
The decision was made in response to the Government of Kenya's directive to halt public sporting activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda has come out strongly against the decision, terming it unfair and wrongly implemented.
According to Shikanda, FKF used outdated rules to declare Gor Mahia champions, ignoring the fact that Tusker was leading the table at the time.
"If we are to go by the mid-season standings, Tusker were at the top of the table. Gor Mahia had three matches at hand and those according to football rules are never counted as wins in the event a league is ended prematurely," Shikanda told Nairobi News.
FKF President Nick Mwendwa has defended the decision, stating that they followed the rules carefully and will release a detailed statement on the fate of all the leagues soon.
The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) has also disputed Mwendwa's declarations, asking FKF to furnish it with the process followed to arrive at the decision.
"KPL has the legal mandate to run the league and we would wish to be furnished with the minutes of the meeting which deliberated upon the matter in question with the subsequent resolution already conveyed to the public by FKF," reads a letter by KPL CEO Jack Oguda to FKF.
