Published on May 5, 2020, Google's latest weekly Covid-19 Community Mobility Report shows a significant shift in Kenyans' daily routines.
According to the report, there has been a 16% increase in people visiting their workplaces, marking a notable change in the past week.
Conversely, residential areas have seen a 20% reduction in movement, down from 25% previously.
Additionally, recreational areas such as restaurants, shopping centers, and movie theaters have recorded a 5% reduction in movement.
The recent government directive on the reopening of restaurants may lead to a significant change in these figures in the next report.
The report also highlights a 7% reduction in movement to grocery and pharmacy spaces, as well as a 3% reduction in movement to national parks, public beaches, marinas, dog parks, plazas, and public gardens.
Public transportation, including buses and trains, has witnessed a 6% reduction in movement.
At the county level, Nairobi has seen a 16% increase in residents traveling to work, resulting in an 8% reduction in those within residential spaces.
In Mombasa, there has been a 10% increase in people within work spaces and a 2% reduction in people moving within residential areas.
Kisumu has recorded an increase of 14% of those going to work and a 3% reduction of movement in residential spaces in the past week.
The Covid-19 Community Mobility Reports are part of Google's global response to the coronavirus pandemic, aiming to help people and public health officials understand responses to social distancing guidance.
