On Wednesday, Chris Aletia, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Pastoral Economy and Fisheries, launched a control of dogs and cats mediated rabies vaccination campaign in Lodwar town and its environs.
The campaign aims to reduce the population and infection of dogs and cats in the area.
The week-long exercise, conducted by Veterinary officers in Kanamkemer and Lodwar Township wards, involves castration, spray and neuter, as well as vaccination of dogs and cats against rabies.
According to Aletia, the vaccination will be done with caution and high standards to ensure human safety and health standards are adhered to.
He noted that the veterinary department has been doing well in terms of animal disease control, particularly using the E-surveillance technique, which has helped in locust control by providing coordinates.
Abdullahi Yusuf, the County Chief Officer for Fisheries, Livestock Production and Veterinary Services, stated that the department is committed to controlling zoonotic diseases through regular treatment of livestock.
Benson Longor, the Veterinary Services Director, revealed that the vaccination will reduce the spread of zoonotic diseases and control of rabies in Lodwar Municipality.
He also stated that the department has plans to extend the exercise to other towns in the Sub-Counties.
Staff from the Pastoral Economy and Fisheries department were present during the brief ceremony held at Mifugo Complex.
