On April 28, 2020, Kisumu County Government received a consignment of pharmaceutical supplies worth Sh40 million to support the fight against COVID-19 and alleviate the suffering of vulnerable citizens affected by devastating floods.
The supplies, valued at Ksh 62 million, were purchased from the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) to cater to the needs of various health facilities in the county.
Speaking at the Kisumu County headquarters, Governor Peter Nyong'o flagged off the consignment and emphasized the importance of monitoring the management of the supplies to prevent diversion and pilferage.
'As per the law, government stores should not be transported using private vehicles. This has to stop immediately,' Governor Nyong'o declared, adding that tuk-tuks, motorbikes, and other private vehicles would no longer be used to distribute government drugs and supplies in Kisumu County.
The Governor also announced plans to introduce an electronic dispensing and inventory management system in every public health facility to enhance accountability and transparency in the management of medicine and supplies.
The beneficiaries of the pharmaceutical supplies include Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Ahero, Kombewa, Muhoroni, Nyakach, and Chulaimbo, among others.
