On April 26, 2020, a terror suspect, Suleiman Ali Kodza, alias Pembe, was killed by police in Ngerenya area in South Coast, Kwale, a day after he escaped a police dragnet in Mombasa.

According to a police report, Kodza, who was believed to be the Al-Shabaab ring leader in Diani, attempted to attack the officers using a machete when ordered to surrender, prompting the officers to shoot and fatally injure him.

Police had been on a mission to recover guns at Kodza's house in Mkunazini Shika Adabu when they shot and killed another suspect, Kennedy Okaka, who was not the target of the operation.

During the raid, police recovered an AK-47 rifle, three 7.62 special ammunitions, and a gun magazine from Kodza's house.

Coast Directorate of Criminal Investigation boss Washington Njiru said Kodza was believed to have been involved in the shooting and killing of two officers who were guarding St Paul's ACK Church in Ukunda on September 2017.

Reliable sources told the Nation that the terror suspects were planning to carry out an attack aimed at seizing guns from the police in Likoni area.
