As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread across the globe, African athletes have rallied together to make generous donations to combat the disease.

According to the World Health Organization, there have been over 29,422 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Africa, with more than 1,341 deaths.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, African athletes have shown remarkable generosity, with many donating to those in need.

Kenyan national team captain Victor Wanyama, through his foundation, donated 200 sanitizing kits to needy families in his hometown of Nairobi on March 26th.

Wanyama also urged Kenyans to follow the set guidelines by the government to try and stop the spread of the deadly virus, saying, 'It's very important to listen to what the health experts are saying over this issue. Let's wash our hands regularly.'

Other African athletes who have made similar donations include Kashiwa Reysol striker Michael Olunga, who donated handwash materials and sanitizers to several estates in Nairobi, and Francis Kahata, who donated 10,000 litres of water to Mathare slum residents.

Former Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o donated relief packages to residents of his hometown in Douala, Cameroon, while former Chelsea star Didier Drogba offered his hospital in the Ivory Coast to be used as a coronavirus treatment centre.

Watford striker Danny Welbeck donated a £10,000 relief package to the residents of his mother's hometown in Ghana, and Liverpool forward Sadio Mane donated Sh 5.1 million (£41,000) to Senegalese health authorities fighting coronavirus in his home country.

Other notable donations include NBA Charlotte Hornets star Bisma's donation of over $1 million worth of medical supplies to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cameroonian basketball player Joel Embiid's donation of $500,000 to coronavirus relief and helping team workers who have had their salary temporarily cut due to the outbreak.
