As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, the Kenyan government has taken a crucial step to protect its school-going children. In a move aimed at containing the virus, the government has pushed back the reopening of schools by one month.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha, the decision was made in the interest of the safety of the school children. Speaking on Sunday, Magoha announced that the closure of schools would be extended by a month.
At the same time, Prof Magoha has stated that a decision on whether to postpone national examinations due at the end of the year has not yet been made. The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education were still scheduled to take place as planned.
Magoha's announcement came as the Ministry of Health's Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rashid Aman revealed that 12 more cases of coronavirus had been recorded in the country, taking the overall tally to 355.
