On April 23, 2020, an autopsy was conducted on the body of Blessed John Apewajoye, the husband of gospel singer Ruth Matete, by Chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor.
The autopsy revealed that Blessed John died from multiple organ failure, which was caused by 60% degree burns that led to complications such as sepsis.
However, Ruth Matete is still unable to bury her husband as the Nigerian embassy is holding onto the body, awaiting its release before she can proceed with the burial.
The couple's home in Athi River was the scene of a tragic incident where Blessed John attempted to light up a gas cylinder, which he believed was over-filled, but unfortunately, he was torched when he lit the cylinder inside the house.
Despite the autopsy results being consistent with Ruth Matete's earlier account of the fire incident, a manager claiming to represent Blessed John's interests has raised allegations of cruelty and attempted murder against Ruth Matete.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since launched an investigation into the death, with Ruth Matete recording two statements at the DCI.
