On April 23, 2020, the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) clarified that the collection of new motor vehicle registration plates was not suspended, contrary to claims by car importers.
According to NTSA, the authority had only merged some collection points due to the coronavirus pandemic, ensuring business continuity while adhering to safety guidelines.
NTSA refuted claims that hundreds of imported units were stuck in Mombasa, as owners could not drive them on the roads without proper registration.
“After deliberations, it was resolved that some CFS (Container Freight Station) collection points be merged while taking into account the state of the facility in terms of space and other factors to implement the safety guidelines,” NTSA said.
NTSA identified three points that had been tasked to issue the number plates, including Kencott, CB2, and Autoport.
Car Importers Association of Kenya (CIAK) chairman, Peter Otieno, had earlier requested NTSA to lift the suspension for at least two weeks to register new vehicles.
NTSA assured the public that all online services were available and the authority was working closely with stakeholders to ensure service delivery was not adversely affected during the pandemic.
